Rules

Scoring
  • When the defense blocks a field goal and recovers the ball, the team may take possession at the spot of the recovery or may accept 3 points and kick off to the opposing team.
  • A blocked extra point kick attempt is worth 1 point to the defensive team.
  • Field goals kicked when the ball is snapped from beyond the 40-yard line are worth four points.
Timeouts
  • Each team will have four timeouts per half and two in each overtime period.
Overtime
  • If a game is tied at the end of regulation, the teams will play an overtime period lasting 7 minutes and 30 seconds. If the teams remain tied after this time, they will switch ends and play a second period of the same duration. If the game remains tied at this point, it will be recorded as a tie. There is no "sudden death" overtime, either in the regular season or postseason play.
Penalties
  • Incidental pass interference will result in a 15-yard penalty from the line of scrimmage and an automatic first down. Flagrant pass interference will move the ball to the spot of the foul. The offensive team will receive an automatic first down.
  • Intentional grounding penalties also apply to throwing the ball away out of bounds. Intentional grounding shall be defined as any pass thrown to avoid a tackle that does not land near an eligible receiver, whether in or out of bounds.
  • A player called for a second personal found will be automatically ejected from the game and will be ineligible to play the following week.
Instant Replay
  • Coaches may request an official review of game film on any play involving the following:
    • Turnovers
    • Possession during an attempted catch
    • Spotting of the ball
    • In or out of bounds
    • Personal foul penalties
  • Officials may not refer to game films unless requested to do so by a coach.
  • Coaches will forfeit a timeout for each unsuccessful appeal.
Motion
  • As in Canadian football, more than one offensive back can be in motion at once, and backs may be moving toward the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped (though they may not cross it).
  • The quarterback may not throw a forward pass after crossing the line of scrimmage. However, a receiver who has crossed the line of scrimmage may throw a second forward pass to a teammate.

Clock
  • Teams have 20 seconds to snap the ball after the referee signals it is ready to be put in play.
